Chapter 13

She gripped the handle of her seat tight and took a deep breath trying to ward off the familiar sickening feeling clawing her insides.

God! How she hated the take-offs and landings.

Given her work she travelled often, but still every single time she felt the same unease when the damn things sped up on the runway to take off and then touched down at the time of landing. So very many times she had wondered and wished for a way to travel every part of the word via road. She twisted herself again, trying very hard to get comfortable. She was about to curse the invention of planes once again, when her thoughts were interrupted as the flight tilted further up in the process of gaining some more altitude. Exhaling loudly, she finally moved her heard toward the window. The flight finally levelled and she sighed. As much she hated the travel part of the flights, she couldn't deny the ripple of awe that almost every time filled her when she looked at the clouds beneath her. She closed her eyes, inhaling deeply, hoping to calm her frazzled nerves.

For Khushi, getting flustered or feeling compelled to do something against her wish were two very unfamiliar concepts. All her adult life, she made sure to plan and then stick to her plan. She prided herself for having the ability to shut off everything and every one around her and not let them affect her in any way. But that was a luxury she had until she met Arnav-can manipulate anything with a pulse-Raizada. She was still in a state of daze as to how on earth did the man convinced and managed to get her to where she was sitting right now.

It was almost five am by the time Khushi finally made it back to her bed that night when she made the mistake of spending all those hours with him and nodding yes to his request to join him on the vacation. She had no idea why she said yes. Was it because of the way he asked her. That huskiness wrapped around the desperation she felt in his voice. Or was it his proximity that usually tended to cease her brain from making intelligent decisions. They ended up talking to each other until they noticed the skies above them clearing off the night and making way for the day looming ahead. When her head finally hit the pillow to get couple hours of sleep, she remembered with a shudder that all the hours they sat next to each other, talking about anything and everything, he never for once let go of her hands. And what scared her more was how she too never made the move to remind him of it.

The days that followed were the same - AR kept them busy to a point that they were in office almost every day until nine pm, and when she finally got home, every night seemed to be more restless than before. At some point during these chaotic string of days Arnav came looking for her passport and few other details that she blindly provided to him, without even bothering to notice that he just added her documents to the pile that then went to AR's travel agents to make sure they all had the necessary visas needed for whichever country Arnav had chosen for the vacation. And then the last 24 hours before their flight were sheer torture to say the least.

It was a particularly busy day. She had three meetings with three different suppliers, a painful lunch with few high-end stakeholders and a conference call with her NY staff who, more than half the time of their meeting complained about the new head there. By evening, Khushi was almost on the verge of collapsing. The only thing she looked forward to was Madhumati's food and her comfortable bed, forgetting all about the vacation she promised Arnav. But, obviously her forgetfulness didn't change what she had committed to without thinking. After around one hour, and finally wrapping up all the priority work, Khushi stood up and yawned loudly stretching her hands above her head. But, before she could even think of going home, there stood the reason behind that state of hers, looking extremely fresh and beautiful as ever, with that warm smile which had recently gotten too common around her. Stretching his hands towards her, he softly spoke. "Let's go".

Too tired to understand what he was talking about, she simply placed her hand into his outstretched ones. And the next thing she knew, she was packing her bags and Arnav was sitting with Madhumati sipping coffee and talking as if they were two long lost friends.

By the time she made it back to Raizada Estate, the realization of what she was doing came crashing on her. Perplexed she turned towards Arnav, all set to tell him that she couldn't go through this. She couldn't do this happy, fun weekend thing. "Arnav"

"Sleep Khushi. We have a flight in couple of hours. I will wake you up when its time"

He spoke everything with that same tenderness that he usually used with her when no one was around, and the next thing she felt herself doing yet again was nod, walk toward the guest room and slip into a deep sleep almost immediately.

The next few hours came and went in a rush. She didn't know how she woke up, how she went in for a quick bath and got ready, how she sat in the SUV being driven towards the air field and she definitely didn't know how she came face to face with a gorgeous purpose-built Dreamliner that looked big enough to carry fifty or so people around, with AR splashed proudly on its sides.

The insides of the magnanimous beauty was designed in white, grey and blue colour palette representing clouds floating around the jet. The ceilings were decorated with LEDs to replicate the starry sky above, and the cabin featured long curvy lines to mimic rolling hills. At the middle it had an open meeting space for working, two private suites with bathroom containing stand-up showers, and lounge areas with small and long sofas. There was also a kitchen and a small library. Each of its fixtures and furniture were a mixture of wood and leather - all in warmer shades of cream and gold. And its floor blanketed in thick and plush cream coloured rug.

Every single inch of the jet exuded money and power. It exuded Arnav Singh Raizada.

As the loud voice of the pilot, instructing the outside temperature and altitude boomed across the cabin, Khushi broke out of her thoughts. The seat belt sign was switched off and the next thing she knew, all Raizadas were moving toward the lounge area, laughing and excited about the trip. She heard Payal call out her name, and she sighed again.

What was she doing here? This was not her. She was not this happy person who looked forward to a holiday. Not that she knew what it was as never in her life she had people to share something like a vacation with. No, she was not supposed to be around the people she had come to know in all these weeks to be some of the most genuine and happy people. She felt her brain catching up to her finally after all these days and she took a decision. She would take a flight back from wherever they were going. She wouldn't allow herself to be around this warmth any more than necessary. She needed to get away, for their sake, and for hers. Decision finally made she summoned a smile on her face, and got up to join others in the lounge area.

"I was hoping that NK would join us. I don't get why is he still keeping his distance", Anjali sighed slumping down on one of the cosy sofa in the lounge.

"I spoke to him in office, but he said he needs more time" Akaash joined her too, his brows coming together in anger.

"I will talk to him again. I will tell him to come home next week. If not to live, then at least to meet everyone", Arnav spoke this time. And before anyone else could say anything more, Khushi's soft voice came floating in.

"Don't...don't call him before he is ready. Trust me, it will make matters worse. Until a person is ready to apologize or to accept new or old relationships, no amount of discussion will help. A bond made by coercion is a bond begging for decimation. I know I am not supposed to interfere, but give him time to come in terms with the new family dynamics. Give him time to realize how badly even he needs you all"

There was pin drop silence as everyone just stared at Khushi, taking in her every word. After a while, Shayam cleared his throat, and nodded, a small smile on his face, "I agree with Khushi. Things have changed a lot since that incident. NK has matured a lot. He just needs time to find his ground again. We need to give him all the time he needs"

And the energy in the room changed again. Everyone nodded, and the laughs and recounting stories of their last vacation replaced the slight sombreness from earlier and Khushi was yet again in awe of the love and care that existed between the people in front of her.

Several hours later, the pilot announced that they were on the decent making everyone stir from their sleep. Khushi opened her eyes slowly, her eyes falling on Arnav, who was perched up on the couch right opposite to her. His eyes blinked open almost at the same time, and instinctively connected with hers. He gave her a warm smile, and she felt the familiar jolt. By now she was used to his eyes and that was another reason she wanted to cut this trip short. She just didn't know how to think around him anymore and she knew it was time to pull herself back before she got hurt or worse, hurt him.

Arnav, Anjali and Shayam were the first ones out of the jet, and then followed Payal and Akaash. Khushi trailed behind rehearsing the words in her head that needed to be said before she could try to book a flight back and get away from the overwhelming company around her.

With a deep breath, she stepped outside completely unprepared for the strong refreshing cool winds that hit her with full force. She looked up and gasped. Beautiful blue waters were stretched in front of her, half-risen sun making it shimmer in yellow glow.

In trance, she walked towards the end of the fence surrounding the small air strip where the jet had landed and took a deep breath, trying to fill her lungs with the beauty that laid bare in front of her.

Arnav who was standing with the pilot, giving him instructions about their return, looked in Khushi's direction and sighed. With a final nod to pilot, he quietly made his way towards her.

"Beautiful, isn't it?"

"It is". she smiled again without thinking, taking in the beauty of Cape Town waters.

Arnav then turned his head towards Khushi and whispered, "I know you are thinking of running away, but please give it a chance. If by the end of today you don't like it here, then I promise, I will personally book a ticket for you"

Khushi looked at Arnav, with wide eyes.

"How did you..."

He tilted his head and smiled, "I can see it on your face. Almost from the time we took off. I didn't want to risk an emergency landing, so I kept my mouth shut in the jet"

She couldn't help but chuckle and looked up at him. He then gingerly took her fingers in his, and continued "You are here already so why don't you give it a couple of hours. Nothing to loose really"

She gulped. If only that statement was true.

She took a deep breath and nodded, unable to see another option, for now.

Their limo cruised across the streets of Cape Town towards their hotel, and the only thing all of them could do was to be amazed by the beauty around them - Huge sky scrapers, beautiful cathedrals, greenery along the roads and the blue water of Atlantic Ocean following them everywhere.

"Which hotel are we going to Bhai?", Akaash spoke with his eyes still trained outside

"Yes Arnav...what's the plan now?" Shayam added.

"We are around ten mins out. Lets freshen up and have breakfast and then we will start with our tour", Arnav replied with a grin.

"Oh come on at least now you can share your plans with us"

"Patience people - I hear it is a great virtue"

Anjali groaned in response, making Arnav snigger.

"Oh my freakin' word", Shayam exclaimed.

"Bhai, you are a genius. Where do you find places like these", this time it was Payal.

The ultra-luxurious split level villa was perched high above the azure waters of Bantry Bay with endless horizon views from every corner. They all moved inside the villa, and bellowed again, almost at the same time at the beauty in front of them. Designed to offer an intimate mountainside sanctuary, the villa had the shores of Atlantic Ocean at its foot.

The lower level of the villa was occupied by an immaculate open-plan, kitchen to living room area, a study and a beautiful deck with a huge infinity pool. Two bedrooms that occupied the opposite corners of the floor had two of its sides covered by floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, making the no-end-in-sight ocean their first view in morning and last one at night.

"Oh god, you guys got to see this". Arnav, Khushi, Shayam and Anjali were still reeling in the morning beauty of the ocean, when they heard Akaash's voice from upstairs.

Excited, they all made their way up and gasped in awe. The upper bedrooms although exactly the same from the inside as the ones at the lower floor, had access to the wide expansive terrace garden, and pristine white sofas that lay around the entire balcony.

"I think I want to live here forever", Payal crooned while resting her head against Akaash's chest, who just tightened his arms around her in response.

"Ok Payal, you can fantasize about your new home later, but right now, I want us all to freshen up. I have things booked for us and for that we need to be in the car within 2 hours. Can we do that?", Arnav asked, making Payal sigh and then nod.

It took them all half hour more before they finally managed to tear themselves away from the balcony. The two couples occupied the two room on the level above, while Arnav and Khushi took the two rooms on the level below.

After almost one hour later, happily full with the morning buffet spread, they were all back inside their limo, cruising towards their first destination.

"Bloody hell! Are those Sharks?", Khushi screamed in fear, making Arnav chuckle in response.

"Don't tell me you are scared now Gupta?"

"I don't get scared Raizada", she managed a brave voice, but failed to hide a slight tremble that made Arnav smirk.

"In that case, let's test it out then"

Khushi looked at Arnav with wide eyes, as if he had grown horns. "You cannot be serious, you want to go inside that - there are Sharks there"

"Yea...so ? I thought you don't get scared"

Groaning out a curse Khushi walked towards the entrance of the Shark Cage Diving Centre followed by a chuckling Arnav.

"I am so happy that I am pregnant. Ok, enjoy you guys, I will see you in a few". Anjali chuckled dropping a quick kiss to Shayam and waving good bye to others, as she proceeded toward the artists convention Arnav booked exclusively for her.

Akaash and Shayam then turned toward the diving centre giving a loud howl of excitement, whereas, Payal's grip on Akaash's arm tightened painfully making him flinch.

"Every single time Bhai, you plan at least one thing that make us bleed", Akaash grimaced.

"Oh come on it will be fun. And it is perfectly safe. We will go inside the sea in a …" Before Arnav could complete his sentence, he was interrupted by shivering Payal.

"Inside the Sea??? No, not gonna happen. There is no way I am getting in there or letting Ku get in there". Payal's other arm shot out to take hold of Khushi's making her flinch with pain this time.

"Payal, it is just diving. We are not going for a swim. It will be an amazing experience. And come on, you cut people open every day for a living and you are afraid of Sharks"

"Yea, well, I cut people. I have not seen a shark on my table until now"

Arnav laughed again.

"I have bought the tickets and we all are going in. And as you all know, you cannot really say no, remember"

Cursing, shouting and grimacing, they all finally made it to the equipment shop, allowing the people there to get them ready for getting inside the sea.

After getting fitted into the appropriate diving gear, they all boarded the diving boats and left the harbour to go towards that spot in the ocean where sharks were most likely to be found. On reaching the channel between the Geyser and Dyer Island, the crew on boat asked them to move inside the blue coloured steel cage secured to the side of the boat, and then carefully lowered it below the ocean surface. The dive master who followed them, instructed all of them to be quite and laid the bait for the Shark. Few minutes in, they finally saw two dark shadows making their way towards them and before they knew it, they were face to face with one big and one small shark. Shayam's eyes widened as he saw the magnificent creature swirling toward them. Payal too, who still had a death grip on Akaash, gasped out in awe. As the sharks circled their cage, they all gawked at the deadly beauty in front of them. Arnav, who was nearest to the cage wall, took out his camera and clicked close up shots of the shark and then turned towards his family taking their pictures with the shark just behind them. He then looked at Khushi who was standing at another corner, looking at the small shark in fascination. Mesmerized, Arnav clicked her picture and that brought her attention towards Arnav. Transfixed, he slowly moved towards her. Stowing his camera in his bag again, he couldn't stop himself from circling his arms around her waist from behind and pulling her back to his chest, making her shiver in response.

After almost one hour, they all made it back to their limo, huge smiles plastered on their faces.

"This is getting really monotonous guys. Every single time you curse me for choosing something unconventional and then this is the kind of faces you have after doing what I plan." Arnav spoke in mock anger, making every chuckle.

They picked up Anjali next, and then Arnav provided the next destination to the driver as they drove to another end of Cape town, with Akaash and Shayam clicking pictures and others just bathing in the beauty of the town.

After few hours they stopped at one of the biggest private game reserve which was famous for playing home to several species of animals and birds.

They were welcomed with glasses of champagne, juice and snacks - which they happily indulged in for few minutes before setting out on their tour of the reserve.

The land rover that Arnav booked for them arrived with a professional game ranger- who happily offered the steering wheel to one of them.

"Great, can I drive?". Payal asked excitedly.

Arnav and Akaash both shook their heads simultaneously.

"Why not, I am a very conscientious driver?" Payal hands went up on her hips as she raised her eyebrows at them.

"Umm, you are. But I am not sure how conscientious you will be if we by any luck spot a leopard or a lion"

Payal staggered with her eyes wide now. "What! What is it with you and carnivores Bhai. Do you have some deep seated fantasy to get eaten alive that we don't know of?"

"If he does, who is next in line for CEO and COO then?". Khushi smirked, placing her bags in the back of the rover.

"Think we are standing right here Khushi". Akaash raised his palms in a hi-fi as they both turned back to Arnav who was now shaking his head.

He then looked over to the staff who too were sniggering quietly from the side, and shrugged dramatically, "My family, ladies and gentlemen. They are up for sale by the way if any one is interested"

Everyone around them howled in response, as Arnav too chuckled and took his place behind the wheel. "Get in you traitors"

They drove around the reserve for several minutes, the ranger talking non-stop telling them about the plants and animals they encountered along with a leopard they managed to find after couple of hours. They also came across some deadly reptiles. The ranger asked them to stop and get out to see some of them up close, and then handed a baby non-venomous python to Arnav, who took it near Payal, making her shriek in horror and others laugh.

Few more hours later they finally stopped for a late lunch. Toward the evening the manager of the reserve, who was also one of a good friend of Arnav, extended them an invite for an exclusive Bush spa. And for the next couple of hours they relaxed their sore muscle and rejuvenated their mind and body.

Their drive back to the resort was another beautiful addition to their day's journey. They stopped at local food plazas and road side shopping centres, trying out South Africa's actual spirit. They reached their rooms after midnight and almost immediately dropped flat on their respective beds. All having a satisfied smile on their faces, especially Khushi, who succumbed to a peaceful sleep, the one-day deal with Arnav long forgotten.

Next day at around 6 am, they all welcomed the morning in the Cape Winelands, which felt like a totally different world - the rising and falling straps of vineyards, gigantic mountains surrounding them and huge wine estates spread across acres of lands. After eating breakfast in the farm, they all strolled around, capturing the unseen beauty and tasting exotic and rustic wine, while Anjali sampled all the fruity drinks she could get her hands on.

After spending a better part of the morning relaxing in the farms, they all proceeded towards the waterfront. Established on the shore of Atlantic, it had every single thing a person could ever think of doing. They all walked into the underwater aquarium and spent some time inside it, amazed by the hundreds of sea creatures surrounding them. Later, Arnav, Akaash and Khushi opted for the helicopter flips whereas, Shayam stayed back with Anjali and Payal to spend lazy minutes on the beach.

Grabbing a quick bite, they all boarded the aerial cable way next, to lead them to Table Mountains. Inside the aerial cabin, the panoramic view of cape town was beyond breath taking - blue waters flowing below with clouds flying across them, the majestic mountains forming a wall at the far end of the sea and the setting sun leaving a red hue behind - it was all a sheer bliss.

They spent the early evening watching the beautiful sunset from the highest point in South Africa, and then strolled back to get on to a beautiful cruise ship for a Michelin start worthy dinner.

Sailing across the sea feeling its peaceful waves around, Anjali, who had her head resting on Shayam's shoulder spoke in a soft tone.

"I wish we didn't had to go back. This is heaven"

"I still stand by my statement from yesterday. I think I want to live here - forever". Payal who was engulfed in Akaash's arms, with her back resting against his chest sighed in response.

Arnav smiled with content. This is what he wanted when he picked this location for their small vacation. This perfect mix of excitement and relaxation.

His attention then travelled over to Khushi, who was surprisingly very quiet from the time they got inside the ship. She did add few mono syllables here and there, but all throughout their dinner he could sense her disconnect. She looked peaceful and troubled at the same time.

He gave out a shuddering exhale as he saw her snuggle into the wrap she had around her, her eyes dropping close. The fact that she chose to sit away from everyone didn't escape him. His heart breaking all over for the woman who had loneliness in her eyes even when she was surrounded with people who cared for her. And the need to hug her and ask her to stop thinking made his heart thump against his chest.

He had, carelessly, without thinking taken her into his arms yesterday when they went diving. Not once he thought about his family around them. The only thing he wanted when he saw her standing in that corner of that cage was to be close to her, touch her. Thankfully, his family members were too scared and fascinated with the sharks around them to notice his struggle to let her go. And now, once again, the need to pull her close to him overpowered his brain. But he knew he couldn't possibly dare to do that. Not when everyone were so near and aware. He also knew he needed to talk to her. He just had to figure what he wanted to talk to her. Because the thoughts running in his mind right now were not something he could think of sharing with her without risking her running away from him.

"We have to be at the air strip in six hours" Arnav spoke as they all made their way back to the resort.

"Let's take a small nap then. I am too tired to even move" Payal yawned out a reply.

They all bid each other tired good night, and one hour later the entire villa went dead silent.

Arnav twisted his neck and groaned as he finally got through the emails that needed his attention. Satisfied that nothing will go up in flames until he reached AR tomorrow, he shut his laptop with a click and got up to slide open his bedroom glass door to step out on the deck. The only sound in the air was the sound of the sea waves crashing on the shores. The light from the moon making the dark water shimmer in silver.

He edged toward the stairs leading down to the serene and completely deserted white sands, when suddenly a movement caught his eyes. He squinted more closely and he felt his breath getting caught in his throat.

Dressed in white coloured shorts and yellow top, with hair flowing freely behind and feet dipped in the sea, Khushi looked like a walking dream. She had her face towards the sea and was so engrossed with it that she didn't notice when Arnav made his way towards her and was now standing in her touching distance.

"Khushi"

She turned around with a gasp. The deep gravel in his voice making her stumble.

"I thought you were sleeping"

"And I thought you were sleeping. Are you ok?"

Khushi trembled again, not sure because of the cool winds or because of his proximity.

"I am, yes"

He swallowed thickly, and automatically took another small step toward her.

"Did you enjoy these two days Khushi?"

She let go of her breath and nodded slowly, "I loved them. This place is so beautiful. Think I agree with Jiji and Anjali - I wouldn't mind staying here forever"

He gave out a soft chuckle. "So where does this fall on your best vacations ever list? Some where high above I hope"

Khushi gave out a painful laugh. She had a response to what he just asked. She just wasn't sure if she could voice it to him. She was scared that her answer might reveal too much of her past. Something she never ever wanted him to know of.

She cleared her throat, trying to think of a noncommittal response, but the moment she looked up at him, his eyes warm, patiently waiting for her answer, the truth came tumbling out. "Umm, this was my first vacation Arnav. So, I will say it tops the chart"

She averted her eyes toward the ocean again while she said this, too afraid to see the pity and questions in his eyes she was sure he would have after hearing her answer.

She waited for his reply. To ask her what she meant. But for some reason none of it came. Confused she turned towards him again and realized immediately what a huge mistake that was.

He was staring at her - no - he was actually drinking her in. He knew what she said. He also knew exactly what she meant. He felt his heart crack for her again. But, in that moment he felt something much stronger than pain. Her face almost sparkling under the moon light, her lips shivering due to the cold wind and her hair caressing her long neck, but her eyes, damn her eyes, shone with sadness and vulnerability.

He couldn't think. He couldn't talk. He simply took another step towards her. His hands gently wrapped around her wrist and he pulled her towards him.

He sighed in relief, finally having her back in his arms. His fingers then moved into her hair and sweeping them to one side, he placed a small kiss on her neck.

Khushi clutched him tightly, as a ripple of deep shiver shot through her spine.

After few seconds, Arnav pulled back slightly and groaned seeing her expressions.

Her eyes were closed and her face looked so serene and calm.

"Khushi" Arnav whispered almost in broken tone and that made her open her eyes, which were now dark reflecting his own need.

He took her face in his palms and looking deep into her eyes, he lowered his lips desperate for her taste, desperate to take away all her pain.

His lips were just inches away from hers, when a distant sound of a ship snapped them back to reality, and Khushi's eyes widened. With a gasp her hands came on his chest and with all her might she pushed Arnav away from her.

Breaths laboured, eyes still dark with passion, Khushi turned towards the resort to run away from him, but before she could do that, his soft voice washed over her.

"Running again Khushi? How many times are you going to do that?"

Ignoring him, she took another step towards the resort, but his hand came around her wrist and instantly she was pulled back into his embrace.

"Let me go Arnav", she whimpered

"Why?"

"You can't hold me against my will. You can't take advantage..."

"Khushi, please don't insult me. You and I both know that I am not holding you against your will. And this is the last time I am hearing words like advantage from your mouth. You know me better than that"

Khushi looked at Arnav who was looking at her with so much affection that it made her heart thump erratically inside her chest. He was evoking feelings in her which she was not familiar with and that was scaring her. With another shaky breath she tried to pull out of his touch and spoke in a small voice.

"Why are you doing this Arnav? What do you want?"

"You" , he replied in a heartbeat, lovingly sweeping her hair from her forehead.

"What" , Khushi shivered again as her eyes went wide, not expecting that response from him.

"Don't you see Khushi, I have feelings for you. I still don't know what these feelings are, but I know that I care about you, a lot. Seeing you sad like this pricks me. See Khushi, I can try to be subtle and drop hints all around you hoping that you will understand what I feel for you. But, we both are busy, intelligent and no-nonsense people and I don't want to test mine or your intelligence by being sly about how I feel"

Taking another ragged breath, Arnav caressed her cheeks and continued.

"Khushi Gupta, I like you. I know, we still have a lot to learn about each other, but I can say one thing with absolute certainty - the way you make me feel, no one has ever made me feel this way before. And I want to explore this. I want to understand this, with you. I need you to trust me, I need you to accept a very basic fact that whatever happens, I would never, ever, hurt you."

By now, Khushi had tears in her eyes, every single word that Arnav spoke splitting her into two. One part of her wanted to give into this emotion and say yes to whatever he wanted and the other part, the logical part wanted to tear herself out of his arms and never see him again.

Arnav understood her dilemma and with a soft smile he took her face in his palms again, and bent down slowly, giving her lingering kisses on both her cheeks, drinking her tears and making her close her eyes in response.

Resting his forehead against hers he exhaled, his warm breath fanning her face. "Now I am hoping you feel something for me too, otherwise I am fairly sure you would have thrown a left-hook at me by now". This made her chuckle through her tears. Smiling he dropped a kiss on the tip of her nose and continued "Take how much ever time you need to come in terms with all this. But, just know one thing Khushi - I am not going anywhere. I don't think I can"
